Chemical industry
All processes in chemical industry are conducted using equipment in which stainless steel plays a major role. Practically all tanks, vessels, reactors, pipes and other equipment of the chemical industry are made of austenitic stainless steel. The minimum grade is 1.4404; other usual types are 1.4539, 1.4547, 1.4462 – steels with high molybdenum content.
Main features required from the material: high corrosion resistance in sulphuric acid and chlorine environments, good mechanical properties and resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
Choosing the right type of stainless steel for use in the chemical industry is a difficult task and requires a lot of experience.
